What SIFE Does : Personal Financial Success Skills

4# Personal Financial Success Skills

Ghana
University of Cape Coast
Many of Ghana's workers underestimate the importance of accumulating a savings and therefore retire in poverty. UCC SIFE partnered with Ghana's Social Security and National Trust to organize lessons on the benefits of saving for retirement and ways to gain access to and complete application forms properly. Over 100 workers who participated in the workshops have now registered with the administration, and the project has been so successful that Ghana's Social Security and National Trust has adopted the idea and expanded it to the national level.

South Africa
University of the Free State
UFS SIFE's "Cashflow for Kidz" board game challenges students to use problem-solving skills to lrean financial responsibility. Players reinforce concepts learned by creating and selling greeting cards and then donating profits to a local charity. As an extension to the project, the SIFE Team plans to market the cards to greeting card companies throughout the country.

United States
Flagler College
Flagler SIFE is spreading fiscal responsibility through its syndicated radio program, Cash Positive Radio. The five-minute news and talk show offers financial tips to an annual audience of more than four million college and university students across the country.

Brazil
Pontifica Universidade Catolica de Campinas (PUC Campinas)
PUC Campinas SIFE created a mock city to teach children the importance of saving, investing, and maintaining a budget. Students visit six businesses and practice activities such as buying and selling products, transacting at a bank, and learning salary concepts. Over 250 children have learned the basics of financial responsibility through this interactive SIFE project.

What SIFE Does : Business Ethics

3# Business Ethics

Canada
Wilfrid Laurier University
WLU SIFE publishes a weekly ethics article in the campus newspaper. Students are invited to submit ethical dilemmas for the newspaper column, and SIFE students work with a university ethics professor to respond with possible solutions.

Malaysia
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)
SIFE UiTM broadcasts the importance of sound business ethics by radio to 35,000 listeners in the local community. The radio spots were part of a week-long ethics program that also included an exhibition of global ethics issues, a public forum to discuss the topic, and an on-campus quiz competition on ethical practices.

New Zealand
Waikato Management School
High school students across New Zealand are challenged to assess the business ethics of various national companies in an ethics competition organized by SIFE Waikato. Pre and post-test results indicated a 50 percent increase in learning. The SIFE Team awarded Sustainable Enterprise and Ethics Awards and prize money to the two winning high schools.

United Kingdom
University of Newcastle upon Tyne
University of Newcastle upon Tyne SIFE worked with a local film company to encourage positive business ethics. The team interviewed prominent doctors, lawyers, and executives about the topic. The finished film was shown at a 2004 national British conference and offered to UK schools as a curriculum supplement.

What SIFE Does : Entrepreneurship

2# Entrepreneurship

Australia
Curtin University of Technology
Curtin SIFE developed "Entrepreneur's Challenge," a competition to design innovative products and services to fill a market need. Participants worked in teams to go from idea generation and business planning to final submissions and presentations. Approximately 120 people competed and 30 businesses were launched as a result.

China
Shanghai International Studies University
SIFE SISU spent more than 2,000 hours implementing "Rainbow over the Fields" in the rural villages of Yancheng, Yixing and Chengde. The project assisted impoverished Chinese farmers by providing direct access to education and basic resources. Farmers were provided seeds and other supplies, and they learned supply and demand, efficient use of resources, new agriculture methods, and how to search the Internet for information. One farmer, Zhang Danong, said, "Through your program, I really broadened my view... to earn a brighter future for my family!"

Russia
Russian State Pedagogical University - St. Petersburg
In an effort to increase small business start-ups in Russia, this SIFE Team organized ten workshops to teach basic knowledge of creating and running a successful company. Seminars were led by students already experience in business, and the nearly 70 university participants enjoyed the innovative peer-to-peer format. Thinking that "if they can do it, I can do it," 11 students decided to start their own businesses and received personal assistance from the SIFE Team.

Morocco
Institut des Hautes Etudes de Management - Casablanca (HEM)
HEM SIFE brought a lucrative industry to a struggling community. Through research, Morocco SIFE discovered that the village of Oulad Bouziri had an abundance of snails, but the community's efforts to market escargot were unstructured and it was one of the country's poorest regions. The team created a snail farming cooperative in the village. They formed a business plan, secured a facility to house the snails, introduced snail breeding and developed a website to increase national and international orders.

What SIFE Does : Market Economics

1# Market Economics

Kyrgyzstan
American University - Central Asia
Many individuals in rural Kyrgyzstan had little or no access to updated economic information, and business activity suffered as a result. AUC SIFE established an information center to teach basic computer skills and provide Internet usage training. Through the internet, citizens now have knowledge of worldwide economic events and their relevance to the local economy. The center has become a training center, global connection point, and an online marketplace to buy and sell products.

Slovenia
University of Ljubljana
Slovenia's recent membership into the European Union made way for a number of new economic opportunities for its citizens. Through a series of workshops, educational computer games, lectures and competitions, UL SIFE gave Slovenians knowledge of the European Union and its role in the international business community, the effects of Slovenia's participation, and how individuals could aim for a brighter economic future as a result of this major national event.

Nigeria
Kaduna Polytechnic
The SIFE Team at Kaduna Polytechnic developed partnerships with SIFE Teams on four continents to teach secondary students how free markets work in the global economy. Project G-Trade linked students from different countries together through an international simulation of international trade processes on the Internet. Participants learned about currency exchanges, ethics in foreign transactions, and key documents used in international trade.

Poland
Gdansk University
Over 600 Polish students are logging on for an interactive lesson on how free markets work in the global economy. While playing this Internet game created by Gdansk University SIFE, players run their own virtual companies and communicate via cyberspace with other "managers."
